Opening reception : Thursday September 5th, 5 pm
Exhibition Period : September 5-28 2013
Exhibition Venue : Number 1 Gallery
The Silom Galleria Bld, 4th Floor, Silom Rd.,Bangkok
Number 1 Gallery proudly presents the “Undead” exhibition by Kriangkrai Kongkhanun, a Thai artist who studied at art schools in Thailand and Italy. It was in Europe where he absorbed western culture and immersed himself in their artistic traditions. Studying the Great masters in the halls of the eminent art museums, his art has been heavily influenced by his experiences. On returning to Thailand, Kriangkrai’s art has combined his knowledge of western art with his Buddhist upbringing. Subsequently, he has achieved fame as an emerging international artist with his work having been exhibited in 23 countries, mainly in America, Europe and Asia.

In his latest exhibition, Kriangkrai’s drawings incorporate his iconic, organic figures which are in a constant struggle with unrelentingly sadistic demons. Emotionless eyes are ever-present, judging and condemning as the battle for autonomy and self-control persists. Contradictions permeate with delicately drawn wings giving a sense of flight while ghostly tears descend. The red petals, a glaring contrast against the black and white drawing, could be a sign of vitality blooming or the smear of blood as the life-force fades.

Kriangkrai Kongkhanun was born in 1980 and graduated with a Masters degree from Silpakorn University. His major exhibitions in 2012 include the 5th Beijing International Art Biennale (BIAB), Beijing, China and “On The Threshold of The Senses”, Tally Beck Contemporary, New York, USA. In 2013 his work was shown in “Restless II” at the Cavin-Morris Gallery, New York, USA as well as “Global Art 2013”, Douro Museum, Portugal and “Among Strangers”, Gallery Jireh, Republic of Korea. Currently, he is collaborating with a Columbian artist for a project organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia and he will participate in the 16th international Biennial of Engraving Sarcelles in France in November. Next year, he will have solo exhibitions in Monaco and France.

Exposition « Undead » (jeudi)

Contemporary Abysses ( อบายภูมิร่วมสมัย )

Contemporary Abysses ( อบายภูมิร่วมสมัย )

Human beings are liable to commit wrong doings, forget ethics and let themselves overwhelmed by lust. The wrong doings, such as the possession of vengeance, anger, hatred, greed and jealously, have deep-rooted in human lives, and become the dark side of human beings like germs that are hiding in human bodies. What we can do is to know about these wrong doings o that we can peacefully cope with them without causing dangers to ourselves. However, whenever our minds are weakened, these germs will proliferate, spread and become uncontrollable until we, the hosts, become non-human.
Kriangkrai Kongkhanun desired to depict the emotions and feeling of human beings whose minds are seized by wrong doings, which are also fundamental emotions of human beings. A mind that falls deep into the abyss of sins and wrong doings is like a life that falls deep into the abyss of an ocean. This sinful abyss is full of various negative emotions and feelings. Thus,Kriangkrai imagines the worlds of sin by adapting the sceneries of devils and demons described in different legends and the ancient Buddhist scripture. These devils and demons have the appearances that reflect their “Karma” (What they have done). This scenery depicts the abstract concepts of hatred, anger, vengeance, greed and jealousy, each of which has its own shape which Kriangkrai designs in order to symbolize people who commit wrong doings. This work incorporates both the thing in the past and those currently happening, so it is named “Contemporary Abysses”.

Back to the Beijing Biennale for Kriangkrai Kongkhanun

Kriangkrai Kongkhanun
The 5th Beijing Biennale marks the return to the Biennale for Kriangkrai Kongkhanun who previously had his work displayed there in 2008 when the Biennale coincided with the Beijing Olympics. This year, the Biennale proved no less eventful with 261 artists originating from 85 countries. So far, the Beijing Biennale has been held successively for four times in 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2010. The participating artists have totaled more than 2000 and the visitor numbers have reached an estimated one million during the past seven years.

The National Art Museum of China

This year the Biennale is being held at the National Art Museum of China from the 28th of September to the 22nd of October and the theme for the exhibition is ‘Future and Reality’. The idea behind this premise is that mankind has been idealizing an abstract future for centuries. However, this vision needs to be grounded in reality in order for it to have any true sense of direction. If we take stock of the world around us, what can we predict for the potential of mankind? Today’s media is filled with natural disasters, impending crises and human conflicts. How does this impact our dreams for the future? In a sense, this is an appropriate theme for a Biennale held in the capital city of China. A capital that has been seeing remarkable growth during recent years as it reaches towards its aspirations for the future.

Kriangkrai Kongkhanun, Beijing Biennale 2012

Apart from the physical world which we inhabit, another aspect which directs us to our future is our spiritual strength. By understanding our inner core, we can determine the course of our lives. Lack of understanding can cause us to lose our way. Kriangkrai Kongkhanun’s work explores the idea that hell is within us. His work – woodcut prints – that was selected for the Biennale was exhibited in a series of three panels, each depicting aquatic scenes with amorphic, mutated versions of sea creatures. These brutal creatures of his imagination have fluid-like motion that seems to drag the viewer down - literally into the pits of hell. This feeling of the hell within us is a constant theme in Kriangkrai’s work as he is largely influenced by the Theravada strain of Buddhism, the predominant religion of his native country, Thailand. Even though this work is based on religion, the sensations depicted in the work – anger, confusion, helplessness – is a constant presence in most people’s lives. These emotions shape our reality and can define our future. If we become overwhelmed by our emotions, what does this mean for our personal future? Can we hope to attain our lofty goals when our own compass us fails due to our inner turmoil?
